Alaska Musk Ox Hunting
The musk ox hunt is by
drawing only and for some reason you have better luck being drawn
if I put you in as a party of two. This hunt is definitely
a hunt of a lifetime and a lot of fun.
You will fly from Anchorage
to Bethel and stay the night in a hotel. The next day you are
required to go to a class given by the Fish and Game Department
about the hunt and what to look for in big bull. From Bethel you
will take a plane to McCoreoh where we will stay in a typical
warm village home. You will meet the people of the village and
have a chance to purchase or trade for hand-woven baskets and
carvings. You must remember this is a "dry" village and absolutely
no alcohol is allowed - you WILL go to jail for possession.
For the hunt, each person
has his or her own snow machine (versus other outfitters that
tie everyone in a sled and go). The weather up there is cold
this time of year and you must dress for it - we will discuss
the necessary cold weather gear when it gets closer to hunt time.
It is imperative that you dress appropriately - for safety as
well as comfort.
You are only allowed
two bags; a gun case does count as one bag. The other bag can
only weigh 70 pounds - any overage you must pay for if you are
even allowed to bring it with you. The freight for the head and
hide of the musk ox runs approximately $200.00 to Anchorage. To
ship the animal home you must go through a licensed taxidermist
because the musk ox is a federally controlled animal - this will
also run approximately $200.00.
